The below are the component links to this on-line "tom's hardware guide" article called: Installing WindowsXP and Service Pack 2 with 1 CD
This procedure was developed for the Dell Reinstallation CD (aka: system restore CD) that contained Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1, on a system running Windows XP Pro SP1. It should apply to almost any OEM XP restore CD.
Click here to see if you need to use the manual slipstreaming method for your Dell Reinstallation CD (aka: system restore CD).
The SVCPACK.IN_ file that was used below was copied from a Microsoft Windows XP Professional Upgrade CD (Win XP Pro SP1).
Before you begin:
The instructions in page7.html and page8.html for burning the new install CD have also been successfully tested using "Nero 6 Ultra Edition" and with "Easy CD Creator 5x". The instructions below only include the steps for using Nero. You will have to adapt the instructions for use with your burning software.

Notes for page2.html
Your OEM Restore CD / Reinstallation CD may have
additional files and folders
that must also be copied to the folder: C:\WIN_CD\CD.
These additional files and folders may be hidden. To view/copy them, you may
need to select the “Show hidden files and folders” in Explorer’s folder Options…

Notes for page3.html
If using the file from the XP Service Pack 2 CD then, when instructed to
execute:
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /x,
replace it with
XPSP2.EXE /x
.

At the bottom of link: page4.html,
BEFORE you open a DOS Prompt
and run the
update /integrate , do the following:
Delete
file:
C:\WIN_CD\CD\SUPPORT\TOOLS\DEPLOY.CAB
The SP2
DEPLOY.CAB file that you downloaded will have a name like
"WindowsXP-KB838080-SP2-DeployTools-ENU.cab".
Rename it to: DEPLOY.CAB
and copy it
into the
C:\WIN_CD\CD\SUPPORT\TOOLS\
folder, replacing the "DEPLOY.CAB" you previously deleted there.
Then
examine the folder: C:\WIN_CD\CD for the presence of the SVCPACK folder
After copying the
contents of the original install CD to folder: C:\WIN_CD\CD, but before doing the
slipstream process, you must delete the SVCPACK folder and its contents, then delete
file: SVCPACK.INF from the i386 folder, then copy file: SVCPACK.IN_ from another
XP CD to the i386 folder; then continue with the slipstream
process. If you do not perform these steps first, you will encounter an error.
If you did not add a copy of the
SVCPACK.IN_ to the i386 folder then the XP install program will issue a SVCPACK
error – but it will allow you to continue
the installation of XP from the slipstreamed CD.

Running Windows Update from IE for the first time - after installing SP2
After
successfully installing WindowsXP using your new SP2 CD
AND before
running Windows Update for any patches – you should first install
the
Java 2 Runtime Environment.
Here is the
link. The new version of
Windows Update may have errors and not process successfully on some systems
without Java present.
Upon booting for the first time, a window for the Security Center will appear and ask you to turn on Automatic Updates. Decline and leave it turned off.
Set up the PC, log onto the Desktop and install any required system-specific drivers/utilities.
After the system is configured, download the J2RE (if you haven’t already done so) and install it.
After installing Java you may run Windows Update. When you run Windows Update for the first time it will need to download and install its own update installer program.
Initially, it is recommended that you click on the Custom Install link and review the list of updates. Note the “Install updates” column in blue on the left. Windows Update no longer lists all of the updates together. You will need to click on “high priority”, “optional software”, and “optional hardware” updates as needed. Several reboots may be needed to complete all the updates.
After completing the updates, you may turn on Automatic Updates.

This is a link to the page specifically about "Microsoft Update". The nice
feature of "Microsoft Update" over "Windows Update" is that it also checks for
MS Office updates at the same time - if you have Office XP or greater. See the
link for details.
